Types of Braces
Braces have come a long way from the mouthful of metal you might remember from your own childhood. Today’s braces are smaller, more comfortable, and more efficient than ever, and the right choice depends on your smile, your lifestyle, and how you want to get there. We offer two options at Sunrise, and we’ll walk you through both honestly, including what each one actually costs in time and money, so you can pick the one that fits your family instead of the one that’s easiest for us to sell.
Whichever option you choose, the same team and the same honest approach come with it. We’ll check in regularly, adjust the plan if your treatment isn’t tracking the way we expected, and always tell you where things stand.
Traditional Metal
Traditional metal braces are still one of the most reliable ways to move teeth, and for a lot of patients — especially kids and teens with more complex movements ahead of them — they’re still the right tool for the job. Each bracket is bonded to a tooth and connected by an archwire, which we change or adjust at regular visits to gradually guide teeth into place. Today’s brackets are smaller and less noticeable than they used to be, and you can still pick your colored bands at every visit, which tends to be the highlight of the appointment for our younger patients.
Metal braces are also often the most budget-friendly option. Because they’ve been refined for decades, we know exactly what to expect from them — which means fewer surprises in your treatment timeline. If your case involves more significant movement, bite correction, or spacing issues, traditional metal braces are frequently the most direct and predictable path to get there.
Damon Ultima Self-Ligating
Damon Ultima braces work on the same basic principle as traditional braces — brackets and a wire guiding your teeth — but they use a slide mechanism instead of the small elastic ties that hold a traditional wire in place. That difference sounds small, but it matters. Less friction means teeth can move more freely and comfortably, which often translates to fewer adjustment visits and less soreness after each one.
Because the brackets are lower profile, they also tend to be easier to keep clean and a little less noticeable day to day. For patients who want the reliability of traditional braces without some of the friction — literally — Damon Ultima is often a great middle ground. We’ll tell you plainly whether your case is a good fit for this option, since not every bite benefits equally from it.

Braces For Kids
Early treatment isn’t about rushing a child into braces the moment their adult teeth start coming in — it’s about catching problems while they’re still easy to guide, and being honest when it’s better to wait. We recommend most kids have their first orthodontic checkup by age seven, not because every seven-year-old needs braces, but because that’s often when we can spot developing issues — crowding, bite problems, jaw growth patterns — early enough to address them simply, instead of later when the fix is bigger.
If your child is ready for braces now, we’ll make sure the whole experience feels manageable for a kid, not just clinically correct. That means a same-day start when possible, a team that talks to your child directly instead of just past them, and colored bands they’ll actually be excited to pick. And if your child isn’t ready yet, we’ll tell you that too, along with a clear sense of when to check back in.

Braces For Teens
The teenage years come with enough already going on without adding confusion about orthodontic treatment to the list. We aim to make braces for teens as low-friction as possible — appointments that work around school schedules, a team that answers a teenager’s real questions (yes, including “will this hurt” and “can I still eat pizza”), and a plan that respects that this is their smile and their treatment, even if a parent is the one booking the appointment.
Consistency matters more than almost anything else at this age, so we focus on building a routine your teen can actually stick to — regular visits, clear expectations, and enough flexibility to accommodate sports, band, and everything else on their schedule. Most teens are excellent candidates for either traditional metal or Damon Ultima braces, and we’ll talk through both options with your teen directly so they understand what’s happening in their own mouth, not just what’s happening to it.

Braces For Adults
More adults are getting braces than you might think, and it’s rarely because they didn’t take care of their teeth — it’s because life got busy, treatment got put off, or a smile that shifted a little more each year finally became something they wanted to fix. Whatever the reason, there’s no such thing as “too late” here, and no judgment either.
Adult treatment often moves a little differently than a teenager’s — bone density, previous dental work, and years of wear can all factor into the plan — so we take extra care to build a realistic timeline based on where your teeth are now, not a generic average. Traditional metal and Damon Ultima are both effective, comfortable options for adult patients, and plenty of our adult patients tell us the same thing: it’s easier than they expected, and the small daily awareness of having braces fades a lot faster than they thought it would.
